Microdermabrasion
is a method of removing dead surface skin cells that helps clean
up the skin and lessen wrinkling on the face and around the eyes.
Microdermabrasion
is accomplished when tiny aluminum crystals are blasted against
the skin in a controlled fashion that causes old skin to flake away,
leaving newer, healthier skin.It takes away small scars, blackheads,
and the top surfaces of acne breakouts. It is performed in the Maple
Grove office.. No anesthesia is required. Microdermabrasion feels
like a tingling sensation as the crystals hit the skin surface.
After the procedure, the skin is mildly pink: that pinkness is generally
gone in 24-36 hours. Use of Copper complexÔ
hydrating gel and/or NeovaÔ
night therapy after the
procedure helps lessen any redness that might develop.
By
repeating this procedure at intervals, usually 1-2 weeks apart for
about 6 treatments, the face is rejuvenated. Wrinkles are diminished
and the skin looks smoother. Large pores are progressively less
obvious after the 2nd, 3rd and 4th
treatments.
Microdermabrasion
generally removes more dead skin than a glycolic wash but less
than laser resurfacing.

Notice
the polished tip of the microdermabrader, which allows it to
glide across your skin.

?
-
A
series of glycolic washes should be used if laser facial
resurfacing is planned.
-
Glycolic
washes are better if any of the tissue to be treated is even
minimally infected.
-
Microdermabrasion
is better for leveling small scars and evening out skin irregularities,
especially the somewhat raised edges of large pores.
-
Microdermabrasion
can get into the corner between the nostril and the cheek
better. Glycolic washes can get closer to the edge of the
bottom eyelid.
-
Both
decrease wrinkles--a consultation is best to determine which
route to go -- or whether a combination series is indicated.
i.e... Instead of a series of 4-6 glycolic washes or 4-6
microdermabrasions, sometimes a mixed series of 6 treatments
will be recommended-- usually 4 microdermabrasions and 2
glycolics or 4 glycolics with 2 microdermabrasions.
-
Both
kinds of treatment can occasionally cause temporary scabbing.
The incidence seems to be about equal.
-
Both
treatments should be used in conjunction with a good facial
care plan that includes daily home glycolic acid treatments
and moisturizers.
